VOLUNTEERING IN TOURISM

  • * Would you like to meet people from all over the world?
  • * Do you want to utilise your skills?
  • * Would you like to make a difference in your local community?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you may like to consider becoming a volunteer in a local Visitor Centre!

There are more than 100 Visitor Information Centres around Western Australia, many of which offer fantastic opportunities for people looking to invest in their local region and community.

If you would like to find out more or register your interest to become a volunteer in the WA Tourism Industry,  contact the Visitor Centre Association today!

HOW IS THIS FOR AN AMAZING RECORD...

These two octogenarians (between them) have given nearly 60 years of voluntary service to the Bridgetown-Greenbushes Visitor Information Centre (it was known as the "Tourist Bureau" when they started and was run purely on a voluntary basis from what was an ex service station. They both even used to pump petrol at that time - an unusual 'income stream' for a Visitor Cnetre!).

Enid Elwin and Dorothy Grigson (from left to right)

This year Dorothy Grigson turned 80 and Enid Elwin, 87. They both live independently and are still driving themselves everywhere they need to go.

They are the best of pals and share many interests including their beloved CWA. Each Saturday morning Dorothy and Enid arrive at the Visitor Information Centre for duty, at 10am. Their contribution is invaluable in so many ways, as they not only have an incredible local knowledge but they also offer visitors who are seeking family history information a wealth of information and an amazing service.

Each November for many years Dorothy and Enid have been "Queens of the Merchandise" for the Blues@Bridgetown Music Festival - taking charge of the retail outlet and selling all the souvenirs and clothing over the 3 day weekend event (they were even presented with a tiara each!). Visitor Centre Manager, Barbara Johnson tells us that these two ladies are an inspiration to all who know them and it is hoped that their smiling faces will be welcoming visitors to the Centre for a long time to come.

Armadale Visitor Centre:

"I have worked as a Volunteer at the Armadale Visitor Centre since 2005. I initially started volunteering to give myself something to do with my spare time. I never thought that it would turn out to be one of the best things I could have done. I love meeting the clients and helping them with their enquiries re: local and information of the whole of WA. This includes doing accommodation and tour bookings on an on-line booking service. The AVC is a very friendly and happy environment in which to work and I do believe that the Centre has given me far more than I had ever expected, I hope to continue to volunteer for many more years" Maz Harfield, Volunteer at the Armadale Visitor Centre, Western Australia.

The Visitor Centre Association of WA congratulate Dorothy, Enid and Maz

on their wonderful achievements!
